Qutang Gorge [ Related Itinerary ]

Qutang Gorge is the first one of the three gorges of the Yangtze River, and it is famous for its sheer and spectacular precipices. There is no doubt that the Qutang Gorge is an attractive scenery spot of Yangtze River tour, because of its irregular landform and the natural scenery of the mountains and water.

The widest point of Qutang Gorge is more than 150 meters while its narrowest point is about 10 meters. Two mountains, the Red Passage Mountain to the north and the White Salt Mountain to the south, both form the Kui Men entrance. The steep precipices form a giant door where the tumultuous Yangtze bursts through in an exciting rush of rolling and roaring water. The deep gorge, fast-moving water, and chains of mountains form an imposing picture. And on the two banks of the Qutang Gorge contain numerous scenic spots. The turbulent waters flowing in the deep gorge along a continuous line of peaks make a most magnificent view.

Upstream from the mouth of Qutang Gorge is the ancient county of Fengjie. On the southern bank of the gorge visitors could find an unusual sight "the Chalk Wall" that full of carved inscriptions. And then see the Mengliang Stairway and Hanging Monk Rock, which have a legend associated with them. The northern bank is also endowed with some interesting sights. Baidi City lies at the top of the northern bank of the gorge. Among all the sightseeing, the Bellows Gorge with the ancient hanging coffins and the ancient plank road is the most famous one. Other attractions include the Rhinoceros Looking at the Moon - a unique stone in the shape of a rhinoceros looking at the moon not far from the Bellows Gorge; the Iron Lock Pass - used to prevent enemy invasions during the Song Dynasty (960 - 1279); the Daxi Culture Heritage Site - the perfect place to learn about Chinese Neolithic Culture. All of these show you the real charm of Qutang Gorge, not only the beautiful natural scenery, but also the rich history and culture.

Although the gorge is no more than 8 kilometers long, the unique and charming scenery is really worth exploring during the tour along Yangtze River.
