Maoling Mausoleum [ Related Itinerary ]

Maoling Mausoleum is located about 40 kilometers from Xian city proper, which is the tomb of Emperor Hanwudi - Liu Che of Han Dynasty. Constructed in the Western Han Dynasty, cost 53 years to finish, as the largest imperial mausoleum with richest burial contents, it is regarded as "the Chinese Pyramid". Today it becomes a museum displaying the history of the Western Han Dynasty (206BC - 24AD) in all dimensions.

The museum is famous for the mausoleums of Emperor Hanwudi, General Huo Qubing, the large-sized stone sculptures of animals and rich and precious genuine exhibits.

About Hanwudi - Liu Che
Emperor Hanwudi - Liu Che is the fifth Emperor of the Western Han Dynasty. During the great achievements in the 54 years reign, he was regarded as one of the greatest emperors in Chinese history parallel Emperor Qin Shi Huang. With his great talent, Western Han Dynasty opened the famous Silk Road to trade with the West Regions to make the country become prosperous.

About Huo Qubing
Huo Qubing is the most famous general during the period of Emperor Hanwudi. At the age of 18, he guided the army to fight against the Xiongnu for 6 times and won every time. But he died when he was 24 years old. To memorize his great achievement, Emperor Hanwudi decided to build a tomb for him in Maoling Mausoleum.

The whole cemetery of Maoling Mausoleum is a square surrounded by a city wall, 46.5 meters high, 431 meters long from east to west and 415 meters long from south to north. Around are the subordinate tombs where the emperor's queen, several meritorious generals and ministers were buried. To protect the mausoleum, there built the graveyard, halls and dwelling houses. What's more, it is said that there are about 5000 guards were sent to live there.

According to historic records, the Emperor Hanwudi used one-third of the taxes to build his tomb so that there was filled with an abundant array of burial objects. Today many of them are still on exhibition in Maoling Museum and all of them show the rich culture and profound history of Western Han Dynasty in China.
