Huaqing Hot Springs is located at the northern foot of Mt. Lishan, 30 kilometers from Xian city proper. Besides the dainty spring scenery, it is famed for the romantic love story of Emperor Xuanzong and his concubine Yang Guifei in the Tang Dynasty (618-907).

It is said that Huaqing Hot Springs had been as an imperial palace for emperors for more than 3000 years and most emperors of Zhou, Qin, Han, Sui and Tang dynasties like to come here during the winter period. In Tang Dynasty, from every October the emperors would come with their concubines and stayed until the next spring comes. According to the record, Over the course of 41 years from 714 to 755, Emperor Tangxuanzong and Yang Guifei came here 36 times.

Highlights in Huaqing Hot Springs
Nine Dragons Lake: The Nine Dragon Lake is an artificial lake excavated in 1959, covering an area of about 5300 square meters. On the lake there is a bridge called Nine Dragon Bridge, which separated the lake into two parts. The upper lake has the modern fountain facility and the lower lake offer the dragon-shaped boat. Along the lakeshore, there scattered series of Tang-styled palaces and pavilions.

Palace of Eternal Life: The Palace of Eternal Life is a four-storeyed exhibition hall originally built in 738 and rebuilt in 2005. The first floor displays the some diplomatic protocols and the lifestyle of the imperial palaces. The second floor shows the development of Tang Dynasty. The third floor explain the romantic love story of Emperor Tangxuanzong and his concubine Yang Guifei. The fourth floor plays the traditional activities with the history of 6000 years. All these in the exhibition hall tell visitors the old history and rich culture of Tang Dynasty.

The Forest of Steles: Huaqing Hot Springs has more than 30 ancient stone steles, stone inscriptions and carvings. Two of them are the most famous: "Stone Stele of Hot Spring" (written by Emperor Tangtaizong) and "Stone Stele of Hot Spring of Northern Wei Dynasty" (the oldest one).
