Hanyang Mausoleum [ Related Itinerary ]

Hanyang Mausoleum is a famous historic site in Xian, located at Zhangjiawan Village, about 20 kilometers north of Xian city proper. This massive mausoleum is the burial ground of Emperor Hanjingdi - Liu Qi, a notable emperor of the Western Han Dynasty (206BC - 24AD), and his empress.

Highlight of Hanyang Mausoleum
Built in 153 AD, the whole mausoleum covers an area of 20 square kilometers, which is divided into several sections including the emperor's tomb, empress' tomb, the south and north burial pits, ceremonial site, human sacrifice graveyard and criminals' cemetery.

Emperor's Tomb: The emperor's tomb is the main building and located at the center of the mausoleum. Surrounded by chambers on its four sides, it features a unique layout. This type of tomb is very popular back in the Han dynasty. Enclosed by wall on each side, it has four big gates and only one gate opened to public. There are also a large number of cultural relics unearthed at this site. 86 pits outside the mausoleum, each of them is filled with countless relics. Covering from 4 meters to more than 100 meters, these pits are different in size and shape. In the 1990s, archaeologists found the outer pits and the pits are all enclosed, just like wooden cases. A great number of lifelike statues of warriors and maidservants and animals have been unearthed.

Empress' Tomb: The empress' tomb sits in the east of the mausoleum but much smaller than the tomb of the emperor. It is very impressive and awe-inspiring, and is 350 meters in length. A wall made of pounded earth encircles the tomb, with four gates on each side. The underground mausoleum is now a massive museum converted from the original site.

Luojing Stone Site: Luojing Stone Site is located southeast of the emperor's tomb and surrounded by a ditch. In the middle there is a huge cubic stone called "Luojing Stone". With 12 doors evenly distributed on four sides, it is the earliest markstone used in measuring in the world.

Built on the north bank of the Wei River, Hanyang Mausoleum is a museum covering the largest ground area among its congeneric in China. With rich cultural relics, modern scientific technologies and pleasant garden landscape, it is an charming tourist destination in Xian. The mysterious environment and the phantom imaging show will make visitors feel like traveling through time.
