Famen Temple [ Related Itinerary ]

Famen Temple is located 100 km in the east of Xian downtown. With more than 1,700 years history, the temple has also known as the grandfather of temples and pagodas in Central China. Covering an area of about 7 hectares area, the temple in total has 24 halls. 

Built long time ago, not long after Buddhism entered China, Famen Temple has been so famous for storing the veritable Finger Bone of the Sakyamuni Buddha, the founder of Buddhism. People say after Sakyamuni Buddha dead, his body become relics after it cremated. After that relic divided in to 84.000 and stored in many pagodas around the world. Famen Temple is one of those pagodas.

The Underground Palace was also rebuild and has become an important historical place. In the west part of the temple, there build a museum where stored many underground palace treasures, valuable cultural objects of Tang Dynasty. On the process of the rebuilt, there founded an underground palace which had closed in more than 1000 years. There buried thousands of rare treasures Some of Tang Dynasty emperors come to Famen Temple honored the Finger Bone of the Sakyamuni Buddha and donated many rare treasures where buried in the underground. That archeological discovery was shocking the world and regarded as one of the important archeological discoveries in China in the 20th century.

Pagoda in Famen Temple almost destroyed in 1981 because age and less maintained. Because of that in 1987, the government decided to dismantle and rebuild the pagoda in its original location. Reopened to the public in 1988, Pagoda inside the temple rebuild with 47 meters high. Inside the pagoda, there also build stairs that could bring visitors to the above so they could enjoy the stunning views around.

In Famen Temple, there also hold international culture tourism festival in April. During the festival, there usually organize many activities including praying for world peace. An exhibition of cultural objects from the Tang Dynasty will also being held.

Famen Temple stands out as a world-class cultural scenic area featuring the "Time-honored Buddhist Holy Land and Age-old Classic Buddhist Site" and also becomes one of the top tourist destinations in Xian.
