Hakka Tulou in Yongding [ Related Itinerary ]

Hakka Tulou is a unique and mysterious architecture style of China only exist in Southern China - the mountainous areas in southwestern Fujian Province bordering Guangdong Province. Hakka Tulou in Yongding is most famous among foreign visitors. Yongding Tulou is usually an enclosed buildings, mostly square or circular in configuration, with a very thick earth wall. Due to the long history, unique style and exquisite decorations, it is a treasure in architecture of China.

As the residence of Hakka and Minnan people, the wall of Tulou is usually made of sticky rice, lime and clay. Inside used the yellowwood and China fir. These materials make Tulou cool in summer and warm in winter, so it is very comfortable to live all the year round. Most of the doors are made of nailed woods which are ten centimeters thick. Some doors are even equipped with trough in case of fire. in order to ventilate the rooms and snipe intruders, one the first and second floors there commonly have windows shut. Standing on the top of the observation tower, it convenient for the residents to grasp the enemies' situation. During the war time before 1949, Yongding Tulou had always been the fortification of the Hakka and played an important role due to its solid construction.

In Yingding County, the Tulous in Hongkeng Village and Gaotou Village are the most famous and popular ones. In Hongkeng Village there are more than 40 Tulous. Zhenchenglou with the nickname of 'the Prince of Tulou' was built in 1912 by the descendants of a rich tobacco merchant. It is a double ring Tulou. The outer ring is 4 stories high with 184 rooms totally and the inner ring is 2 stories high with 32 rooms totally. Chengqilou with the nickname of 'the King of Tulou' is the symbol of Gaotou Village built in 1709. It is a four ring Tulou. A four ring rotunda tulou, The outer ring is 4 stories high with 288 rooms totally; the second ring is 2 stories high with 80 rooms totally; the third ring is one story with 32 rooms and the community hall is at the center.

On 6th July, 2008, Fujian Tulou was inscribed as a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO. In terms of history, aesthetics and science, Yongding Tulou is highly recommended as the ancient castle really worth a visit during your tour to China.
