South Pasture [ Related Itinerary ]

Located at the foot of the north ranges of Tianshan Mountain, about 70 kilometers from Urumqi City, the South Pasture, also known as Nanshan Scenic Area is a top tourist destination in China. Covering an area of 119 square kilometers, with an average altitude of 2,252 meters, South Pasture is a natural pasture with tall trees and beautiful valleys embraced by snow mountains. A visit here is really a unique experience for tourists especially for the natural scenery lovers.

The South Pasture has a long history. During the Tang Dynasty (618 - 907) it had become the private hunting ground of the imperial families. During the Qing Dynasty (1644 - 1911) it turned into a famous pasture and summer resort. In 1989, the South Pasture was approved as provincial scenic spot by Xinjiang government. Nowadays, the South Pasture has become a popular tourist destination perfectly combine the forest scenery with minority life style.

Stretching over a vast natural area, from west to east there scattering several beautiful scenic spots: West White Poplar Valley, Gangou Chrysanthemum Platform, East White Poplar Valley, Shuixi Valley, Zhaobi Mountain, Miao'er Valley. All of them show the fascinating scenery. Also the pasture is surrounded by attractive mountains, among which the White Willow Ditch is the most unique and graceful peak. Snow-capped all year round, while climbing up the east White Willow Ditch, visitors will find a great peak standing ahead. This is the highest peak of Southern Pastures called Shengli Daba or "a glacier kingdom".

Besides enjoying the beautiful natural scenery, there are a lot of interesting things to do in South Pasture such as taste of the delicious local milk tea and foods, and join in the excellent ethnical activities. The most interesting activity is the Chasing Girl of Kazak ethic group, which is a way for unmarried boys and girls to show their love to their beloveds. The activity consists of two parts: the first part is boys and girls riding on horse with boys showing their love to girls; the second part is the boys riding fast with girls to chase their love.

During the tour to the South Pasture, visitors can not only appreciate a beautiful picture of snow-capped mountains, luxuriant grassland, herds of sheep and cattle, but also ride horses and learn more about the minority culture.
