It is said that in ancient times there was a red dragon fled from Heavenly Lake and the Heavenly Empress caught it and sliced it into two parts. The western part of the dragon turned into Yamalike Hill while eastern turned into Red Hill.

Long time ago there were many temples built on the Red Hill including the Red Temple built in Tang Dynasty (618-907); the Pile of Stones built by nomad used to worship gods; the Taoist Jade Emperor Temple, the Great Buddhism Temple, the Great Deeper Temple and the Temple of God of Land built in 1779. Although most of ancient buildings on the Red Hill were damaged in wars during 1933, they had been rebuilt and today a beautiful park has been developed surrounding the Red Hill covering an area of 4 square kilometers. The fifth day of the fourth Chinese lunar month is the Temple Festival of Red Hill. During the temple fair, a lot of visitors will come to pray every year.

Besides the historical temples, modern entertainment facilities and ethnic performances bring a fresh and lively atmosphere to the Red Hill Park. The popular activities include some temple fairs and some folk exhibition activities during the Spring Festival. What's more, every year in winter, during the period of the Ice and Snow Festival of the Silk Road in Urumqi, there are also all kinds of ice sculptures display in Red Hill Park.
