Norbulingka [ Related Itinerary ]

Commonly known as the Summer Palace in Lhasa, Norbulingka, in Tibetan word for "Treasure Park" is the summer palace for Dalai Lama. When summer arrives, the Dalai Lama begins with the transfer from the Potala Palace to the Norbulingka office. With totally 374 rooms, it is the largest man-made garden with the best scenery and the most historical sites in Tibet.

Founded in the 1740s, after two hundred years of expansion, Norbulingka Park covers an area of 360,000 square meters and now turned into "People's Park". The park enjoys a beautiful environment and the well maintained buildings. Norbulingka is divided into three areas: the eastern area includes the former Palace of the entrance and front garden; the central part of the palace is regarded as the core area; the west part is a natural forest featuring gold Lingka. Norbulingka consists of several palace complexes, such as the Kelsang Potrang, Tsokyil Potrang, Golden Linka and Takten Migyur Potrang. Each palace complex is divided into three sections - the palace section, the section in front of the palaces and the woods. Also according to the functional requirements of each area, combined with the natural environment, or the high wall with courtyard, or shady old trees, woodland full of grass and flowers, here form a different landscape to all the travelers. Some people jokingly that Norbulingka is the park composed by "a water tower, two rows of craft shops, and several palaces around the zoo", however the majority of the tourists speak highly of it.

Summer is the best travel season in Tibet since the weather there is warm and humid with lush green coverage throughout the whole city. Also tourists may catch up with Sour Milk Drinking Festival. Because this is the busiest time of the whole Tibetan once a year, during the period the Tibetans will get together and hold a grand act.
