Jokhang Temple [ Related Itinerary ]

Located in the center of Lhasa city, Jokhang Temple is a Tibetan Buddhist monastery, the national cultural heritage, with the history of more than 1350 years. Jokhang Temple is the most brilliant building existing in Tibetan of Tubo period and the oldest building of civil engineering structures as well. So it is one of the symbol attractions in the holy Lhasa city.

Jokhang Temple was built in 647, the 21th year of Zhenguan reign of Tang Dynasty (618 - 907).  It was built to commemorate Princess Bhrikuti of Nepal by Sontzen Gampo (the leader of the Tubo Kingdom) to establish the good relationship with the nearby country. After the generation of additional repair, it formed the large group of buildings.

Standing on the golden dome of Jokhang Temple to overlook the Jokhang Temple Square, from the right distance the mountains are the Potala Palace, near the willow is the "Princess Willow", according to legend was planted by Princess Wen Cheng. Orientation and layout of the Jokhang Temple are different from other Chinese Buddhist temples. The main hall is sitting east of West. The statue of Sakyamuni at age 12 sits in the middle of the hall. It has been gilded many times and decorated elaborately with jewels typical of Tibet. On the top floor, there are four gilded bronze tile tops crafted in the emblematical Tang style. Four-story high main hall, side halls on both sides out there, the layout structure representation of the Buddhist mandala of the universe in the ideal model. The other halls in the temple are Sakyamuni Hall, Tsongkhapa Hall, Songtsan Temple, Ram Temple, God Thermal Mujie Mu Temple, Tibet Palace, etc. Temple of wood carving, exquisite murals, the air filled with butter aroma, looked devoutly visit the Tibetan people are turning.

"People who never been to Jokhang Temple in Lhasa equivalent have not been to Lhasa", this point of view is agreed by almost all travelers. In November 2000, as the expansion project of Potala Palace, Jokhang Temple was approved included in the "World Heritage List", known as the World Heritage. Jokhang Temple integrates the Tibet, Tang, Nepal, Indian architectural style, becoming a model of Tibetan religious architecture through the ages.
