Ancient Cultural Street [ Related Itinerary ]

Located in Gong Nan Street and Gong Bei Street, outside the eastern gate of the Nankai District of Tianjin, the Ancient Culture Street is more than 580 meters long and is one of the top attractions very popular among visitors in Tianjin City.

Originally built in the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911), the Ancient Culture Street was opened to the public in 1986. All the architectures in the old street remain the style of Qing Dynasty which were built with green wall, red pillars, decorated with various forms of sliding paper doors, windows, railings and hang the plaque, couplets, lanterns or banners. Hundreds of small souvenir shops and food stalls are all built in original Qing Dynasty style. In front of these shops, visitors will see colorful pottery designs, which tell simple stories from the Qing Dynasty. Also the beautiful drawing will be found with the patterns of birds, flowers and images of the coast. Among so many original architecture, the two original archways are the symbols of the cultural highlights.

At the center of the Ancient Cultural Street stands the Tianhou Palace, one of the three major Tianhou palaces in China and also one of the oldest Tianhou palaces in existence in the world.
The temple was originally built in 1326 in deference to the heavenly Goddess and in hope of protecting the people in Tianjin. The main building in the palace is called the Main Hall which was built on a high and large pedestal. The Main Hall expressed the typical wooden architecture style of the mid and late Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).

The Ancient Cultural Street is not only rich in ancient architectures but also full of handcrafts and unique artifacts. Almost all the arts and crafts found on this street have been handmade by locals. The clay figurines of mythological figures and opera characters available at many shops. These figurines are famous in Tianjin, especially those made by the Zhang family.

While walking along the old street, visitors will be particularly impressed by the splendid replica classical architecture in the folk style of the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). Surrounding by Chinese traditional culture and customs, it feels like being in past times. Known as the antique marketplace, Tianjin Ancient Cultural Street is very popular among foreign visitors.
