The Garden of Master of the Nets [ Related Itinerary ]

The Garden of Master of the Nets is the smallest of the Suzhou residential gardens, but is a perfectly balanced succession of interconnected spaces wrought moments of aesthetic surprise. Based on illusion, the garden is full of change. In 1997 it was listed as a World Heritage Site by the UNESCO and in 2003 it was listed as the National AAAA level tourist attraction.

This beautiful garden was originally built during the Song Dynasty (960 - 1279) as part of a residence. It was in use until the Taiping Rebellion in the 1860s. Later it was restored and became the residence of a government official. Although it has changed hands several times, each owner did his best to perfect it.

The whole garden is neatly and the layout is well-proportionate. Covering an area of 5400 square meters, the Master of the Nets Garden is mainly divided into East Section and West Section. The eastern part is residential quarters and the western part is composed of garden area. Step into the garden, walking along the walkways, visitors could often enjoy the views through windows onto beautiful flowers or plants framing them from a distance. Constructed so many buildings, visitors can always access the main garden from any room. While walking through the various buildings, it is easy to imagine the life that the original residents lived in a feudal society in ancient China.

Quite different from the lively atmosphere during the daytime, in the evening this classical Chinese garden setting provides an atmosphere of peace and clam. And besides the charming garden view and the delicate pavilions, there are a lot of other interesting things to do in the garden. From mid March to mid November many cultural performances will be held here every evening in the exquisite pavilions and halls, including local operas, folk songs, folk dance, and Chinese music, etc. If time allows, never miss the chance to taste of traditional Chinese culture by appreciating the folk performances.

With the designers' adept skills in synthesizing of art, nature beauty and architecture, the Garden of Master of the Nets is particularly famous for its techniques of relative dimension, strong contrast, exquisite architecture, skilled layout and profound cultural connotation. Seeing is believing, would you like to come and taste of the tranquil and peaceful atmosphere in the garden?
