Lingering Garden was orginally built in 1593, during the Emperor Wanli reign of Ming Dynasty (1368 - 1644). With a history of more than 400 years, it has changed hands several times and each owner did his best to perfect it. Like other famous gardens in Suzhou, the Lingering Garden seeks to create stunning natural landscapes within limited space. Covering an area of 23,300 square meters, according to the building styles, the whole garden can be divided into four parts: the central garden, eastern garden, western garden and northern garden.

The central part is the essence of the whole Lingering Garden and is a typical mansion layout of south region of Yangtze River. In the center of this part stands a pool, with rockery, pavilions and woods surrounded in the northwest. Among all the scenic spots, the Wen Muxi Xiang Pavilion is the best place to enjoy the view of the whole garden. The eastern part is outstanding with a winding veranda. Architectures are also the spotlight of this section with over 10 halls and pavilions, three peaks - Guanyun Peak, Ruiyun Peak and Xiuyun Peak. The Celestial Hall of Five Peaks in the this part is the largest hall in the garden. The western part is the empyrean of Lingering Garden enchanting for its natural scenery with exquisite rockeries. A Hanbi Mountain Villa and Mingse Pavilion are the main observing buildings in the garden. The northern part was used to be a vegetable garden, but now it changed to be the exhibit of the idyllic scenes and a new opened garden of bonsai.

Showing the typical architecture style of Qing Dynasty, the Lingering Garden of Suzhou is well-known for the ingenious layout of architectures, the exquisite beauty of its magnificent halls, and the various sizes, shapes, and colors of the buildings.
