The Humble Administrator's Garden was originally built in 1509, the 4th year of the Emperor Zhengde reign of the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Cost 16 years to be finished, it is built in the typical Ming Dynasty style. The name of the garden came from the ideal of the humble public servant who strives to cultivate the garden's beauty without too attracted to ornamentation. Covering an area of about 52,000 square meters, now the whole garden is dividedd into three parts: the Central Garden, the Eastern Garden and the Western Garden.

Covering an area of about 12350 square meters, with one third covered by water, the Central Garden is truly elite part of the whole garden. The main building in the garden is the Hall of Distant Fragrance. Nearby the hall there is a lotus pool and when summer comes, the pool is filled with fragrant lotuses. And because of this phenomenon, the hall got its name.

Covering an area of about 20670 square meters, most of the scenic spots in the Eastern Garden are newly built. The main building is the Cymbidium Goeingii Hall. In the east of the garden there is a big lawn and in the west there is a pavilion standing on the earth pilled hill. Streams, willows, rocks, pavilions and curved bridges in the Eastern Garden compose a beautiful painting.

Covering an area of about 8350 square meters, the design of the Western Garden is similar to the Central Garden. From the constructions here, visitors could see the architecture style of Qing Dynasty and the excellent creations of Suzhou gardens. The main building here is a stately and ornate hall which is divided into two by a massive screen.

The Humble Administrator's Garden is famous for its exquisite pools, rockeries, islets, bamboo grove, pavilions and corridors. As the representative of the classical gardens in the south regions of China, if time allows, never miss the chance to enjoy the charming garden view here.
