History of the Bund
The Bund was built by the westerns with the history of over 150 years. Before the 1840s, the Bund was a muddy narrow lane. After the First Opium War, Shanghai became the trading port opened to the foreign countries so that a street was paved there and then rows of commercial buildings were built there. In the late 1970s and early 1980s, financial institutions moved into this area instead of the government institutions, meanwhile hotels appeared. In the 1990s, attempted to promote the tourism of the city, Shanghai government decided to extended the Bund and land values in nearby areas. Thus came out the rudiment of the beautiful destination we see today.
