Shanghai Xin Tian Di is reconstructed in 1999 from traditional Shikumen area. After almost 9 years' construction, the original old Shikumen area presents a totally new appearance. Predominantly made up of restaurants, shops, galleries and a large mall, unlike most of central area of Shanghai, it is a vehicle-free leisure area. Most of the cafes and restaurants here feature both indoor and outdoor seating and have active nightlife all the year round, especially during weekends. The fame of Xin Tian Di mainly comes from the fact that all this is housed in replica two-story houses of the Shanghai shikumen style. The whole area can be divided into two parts: the South Block and the North Block. The South Block features modern architecture style with Shikumen architecture as an accompaniment and covers an area of 25,000 square meters. Officially opened to the public in 2002, it has a very modern atmosphere with restaurants from all over the world, boutiques, fashionable ornament shops, food courts, cinemas and one-stop fitness centers, etc. Forming a contrast to the South Block, the North Block remained some antique Shikumen buildings with modern architectural elements inside. Here is the gathering place for upscale stores and luxury restaurants serving different types of dishes from France, Brazil, America, Japan, Germany, Italy, etc.
