Shanghai Museum is located in People's Square, the central zone of Shanghai. Completed in 1996 covering an area of about 11000 square meters, it is a large museum of ancient Chinese art. Boasts 120,000 pieces of rare and precious cultural relics, with advanced facilities, the museum is regarded as one of the Top Four Museums in China (the other three are in Beijing, Xian and Nanjing).

Shanghai Museum is divided into 12 galleries and 3 exhibition halls. Here covers most of the major categories of Chinese art including the bronze ware, ceramics, painting and calligraphy and its distinctive collections. The Bronze Gallery and Sculpture Gallery are located on the first floor; On the second floor there sits the galleries of ceramics; On the third floor there settled Calligraphy Gallery, Painting Gallery and Seals Gallery; On the fourth floor there set up the galleries of jade, coins, furniture of Ming and Qing dynasties and the art works of minorities. 3 exhibition halls are respectively located on the first, second and fourth floors.

Highlights to See in Shanghai Museum
At the southern entrance of the museum there are eight white-marble sculptures selected from over 300 stone and bronze sculpture relics of the Han, Sui and Tang Dynasties. Each of them with a height of 3 meters and weight about 20 tons.

The highlights and the most attractive part in Shanghai Museum is the ancient ceramics collection. More than 500 pieces artwork on display are from various dynasties including painted and gray pottery from the Neolithic age; primitive celadon from the Shang, Zhou and Warring States; mature celadon from the East Han Dynasty; tri-colored glazed pottery from the Tang Dynasty; painted porcelain from the Song, Jin and Liao Dynasties and brilliant works during the Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties. All of them shows the rich culture of ancient China.
