History of Nanjing Road
Nanjing Road enjoys a long history which can date back to the first Opium War (1840-1842). After the first Opium War, Shanghai became a treaty port and opened to the foreign countries. The present Nanjing Road was first the British Concession. To cater for the daily use and the recreational requirements of foreigners, Nanjing Road became the earliest shopping street in the city with vendors selling commodities and then expanded with department stores, restaurants and hotels. As time goes by, this road experienced several times of restructured and changes and finally as we see today, here is filled with modern shopping malls, theaters, specialty stores, cafes and hotels.

East & West Nanjing Road
Nanjing Road is divided into Nanjing East Road and Nanjing West Road. The Nanjing East Road starts from the Bund to the People's Square, which is famous for stylish buildings, advanced equipment and a superb collection of wares and shopping malls. The Nanjing West Road starts from the People's Square to the Urumqi North Road. In recent years, more and more world famous brands throng into the street and have already made it as one of the most popular places to buy luxuries in Shanghai.
