History of Tianya Haijiao
Located more than 1000 kilometers away from the national political and economic center in ancient times, due to the inconvenient traffic, Hainan was once a remote island that very few people reached. For a long time, the remote island was regarded as a jail for rebellious officials. As time goes by, with the development of the economy and technology, and the charming scenery, it becomes a top tourist destination in China nowadays.

Tianya Haijiao was regarded as a furthermost part of the sky and the earth. Walking along the seashore, visitors will first find a stone carved with four characters Nan Tian Yi Zhu, which means "a pillar standing in the southern part of the sky". Walking on for about 500 meters, two stones carved with the characters of Tianya and Haijiao will come into your sight. About the two stones, there left a romantic love story. In ancient times, a young man and a pretty girl fell in love wth each other but their parents disapproved of their marriage, so the lovers eloped. Unfortunately, when they arrived at the island, the agents sent by their parents came here as well. Facing the sea, there's no way to escape. They were so sad that jumped into the sea hand in hand. Suddenly, there was a strong thunderstorm and the young lovers were hit by lightning and then changed into two stones. From then on, the stones were regarded as the beautiful love.

In addition to the amazing seaside landscapes, there are also many other places to visit and interesting things to do. Tianya Haijiao is famous for the inscriptions on precipices, the folk custom garden of Li ethnic minority, the sculpture garden of historic celebrities, the Baliningxia Scenic Area, the Haitian Natural Scenic Area, etc. Also in such a dreamy place, there usually hosts many beautiful events including the famous Sanya International Wedding Festival holding here every year between mid-November and mid-December.
