Confucius Mansion [ Related Itinerary ]

Confucius Mansion, used to be the house of the descendants of Confucius for a long time is located east of the Confucius Temple and it is the must-see during the tour to Qufu City. When Confucius passed away, his posterity settled down near the temple to look after the remains of Confucius and show their respect.

After the death of Confucius, his descendants have always been living next to the Confucius Temple to show their respect. As time goes by, after many times of reconstruction and expansion, the mansion has turned into a typical feudal noble mansion combining official buildings with a residence. Covering an area of 39 acres, the mansion consists of 9 yards, totally 463 buildings including the halls, pavilions and towers. The whole mansion is divided into three parts: the eastern part is the family temple, the western part is the institute and the central part stands the main buildings. Also the Central part is divided into two sections with the first four yards contain offices and the other five serve as residences. Located at the rear of the residences is a garden. Great quantities of rare and precious cultural and historical relics can be found in the Confucius Mansion including more than 9,000 volumes of files from 1534 to 1948.

The main buildings in the Confucius Mansion are built on a north - south axis. Those grouped by the south gate are the former administrative offices including taxes, edicts, rites, registration and examination halls. Walking through the Chongguang Gate, visitors will see the Great Hall and other two halls where are the residential quarters used for weddings, banquets and private functions. The Qiantang Chamber, the living palace for the duke lived is a two-storey building with is rare for a hall this size. Besides the halls, in Confucius Mansion there is another highlight to see - the Five Strange Objects: the strange couplet, the strange picture, the strange beast, the strange tree and the strange monument. Each of them has a particularly unusual feature.

Although less splendid than the Forbidden City, with luxury furnishings, exquisite decorations, precious cultural relics, long history and rich culture, the Confucius Mansion gains a high fame among foreign visitors. This family mansion is the largest of its kind in Chinese history and a visit here is actually a culture tour in China.
