Rishengchang Exchange Shop [ Related Itinerary ]

Located in the West Street in Pingyao City, the Rishengchang Exchange Shop is one of the earliest exchange shops in China. Established in 1823, it is the most famous bank in Pingyao and becomes one of the top tourist destinations among visitors.

Established in 1823 during the Qing Dynasty (1644 - 1911), Rishengchang Exchange Shop in shape of rectangular facing to the north is 65 meters long, 20 meters wide with a total area of 1,300 square meters. At that time it was very famous with over 35 branches in China's major cities. As the representative of culture of Shanxi merchants, Rishengchang Exchange Shop kept traditional features of Shanxi dwellings and meanwhile it is unique because of the balance between architecture and utilization.

The Rishengchang Exchange Shop we see today was fully restored in 1995. The former site now turned to be the Museum consists of more than 20 exhibition halls for visitors to explore. The shop is within a compound with three courtyards. Five rooms facing the street in the front of Rishengchang Exchange Shop are served as the gates and the board with the name of the shop is hanging in central position. Passing through these five rooms, visitors will step into the first courtyard. Along the axis, there sit four cashiers offices. On either side of the front yard are the counters, main banking activities were carried out in the middle courtyard house, which functioned as an exchange center. In the second courtyard there were three halls used for the exchange business. On the second floor, visitors can find some store rooms. The third courtyard served as accommodation. As located away from the noisy street, with tranquil atmosphere, so here is the living place for the senior staff and a resting place for important customers. For security, over the top of the whole courtyard a net made from metal thread was fixed. Small bells were hung on the net to sound a warning if intruders tried to enter the premises.

A visit to the Rishengchang Exchange Shop, visitors will see the appearance and the development of the enterprise and ingenuity of the merchants of ancient China. Both the historical materials and the physical objects here can tell you the trajectory of Chinese national bank industry and its history.
