Longmeng Grottoes [ Related Itinerary ]

Located 13 kilometers south of Luoyang city, Longmen Grottoes is one of the four famous Grottoes in China. With green mountains and clear water around, in November 2000, it was listed as the World Heritage Site. It is the symbol and the most famous attraction in Luoyang.

Longmen Grottoes were carved during the Northern Wei Dynasty around 493 AD. Then it was rebuilt in Western Wei Dynasty, Eastern Wei Dynasty, Northern Qi Dynasty, Sui Dynasty, Tang Dynasty and Five Dynasties. There are more than one kilometer long, two thousand niches and more than 100000 statues remains. Until now, most of the niches are lasted from Northern Wei and Tang Dynasty. The different carving style between the Northern Wei and Tang styles are obvious. Among the Tang grottoes, the Lushena niche is the most famous art group sculpture. This statue niche which is built according to the Huayan Sutra fully presents the peaceful and ideal artistic conception. Longmen Grottoes are full of belief and religion.
