Lugu Lake [ Related Itinerary ]

Lugu Lake is located on the border between Ninglang County in Yunnan Province and Yanyuan County in Sichuan Province, 200 kilometers from Lijiang City. Like a beautiful pearl shining among the hills in Yunnan, it becomes a popular tourist destination now. Covering an area of 50 square kilometers, 2690 meters above the sea level with an average depth of 45 meters, the lake is the highest lake of Yunnan province and one of the deepest freshwater lakes in China.

There are 5 islands on the lake and for a distant view, it looks like green boats floating on the water. Heiwawu Island, Liwubi Island and Lige Island are the most famous ones and the most popular places worth to see at Lugu Lake. Besides, there are also 3 peninsulas and 1 island linked to a seawall on the shore by a path paved with small stones. Along the lakeshore, there sits many cultural sites and scenic spots such as Mosuo villages, plateau hot springs, the Lucky Cave, the Chieftain's Palace, Zhamei Lama Temple, Riyuehe and Yongning Ancient Town. Among all of them, the Mosuo villages are the most popular.

The Mosuo is a branch of the Naxi minority with a population of about 15,000. The Mosuo wooden houses also called Timber House make the villages look graceful and tranquil. All the women in the villages wear long hair and tied into a bun. Usually they wear folding skirts with colorful sashes tied round the waist. The main colors of their clothing are red, green, black and white. In the custom of Mosuo, before 13 years old, both boys and girls are wearing long gowns. And after the initiation ceremony held at the age of 13, men wear trousers and women wear skirts. The Zhuanshan Festival is the traditional festival of the Mosuo people hold on 25th July of the lunar year. During the festival, all of the people are rigged out in their best to worship the Gemu Goddess Mountain and pray for the good fortune.
