West Hill is located in the west suburbs of Kunming, on the shore of the Dian Lake, 15 kilometers from Kunming City. For a distant view, the clusters of hills just look like a giant sleeping Buddha, so the West Hill also gained the name of "Sleeping Buddha Hills". 2,500 meters above sea level, the main attractions on the hill are splendid Huating Temple, Taihua Temple, Sanqing Monastery and the Dragon Gate.

Huating Temple is the biggest existing temple in Kunming with a history of more than 900 years. As a famous sacred place for Buddhism, the temple has significant halls, buildings and Buddha statues such as the Hall of Heavenly Kings, the Mahavira Hall, the Bell Tower, historic couplets and 500 statues of Arhat. Besides, various flowers and precious plants are also planted in the courtyard of the temple.

Taihua Temple is the oldest temple in West Hills which was first built in the Yuan Dynasty (1206 - 1368). The temple got its name because of the location on Taihua Hill. The main halls are the Daxiong Baodian Hall, Piaomiao Pavilion and Sizhao Hall. Taihua Temple is a popular scenic spot nowadays not only for its old history, but also for its charming scenery. Here is the best place to watch the sunrise in the morning and the lights of Kunming at night.

Built on the cliffs at Luohan Hill, more than 300 meters above Dianchi Lake, for a distant view, the Sanqing Pavilion just looks like a "castle in the air". From the name you may know that this is a temple of Taoist. During the visit here, visitors could not only visit the Taoist temples but also enjoy a panoramic view of Dianchi Lake.

Among all the scenic spots in West Hills, the outstanding one is the Dragon Gate. It is a big exquisite stone carved edifice with the stone paths, stone rooms, stone grottoes and stone Buddhist figures carved with excellent craftsmanship. There is a popular Chinese idiom says that "Once you ascend the Dragon Gate, you will receive a sudden boost in your prestige".
