Grand View Park [ Related Itinerary ]

Kunming Grand View Park is located on the shore of Dianchi Lake facing the West Hills. Covering an area of of 478,000 square meters totally, with the land area of 231,000 square meters and the water area of 247,000 square meters, it is one of the popular parks in Kunming City and becomes more and more popular in recent years.

In 1682, there was a monk named Qianyin built a small temple to teach Buddhism here. In 1690, the official of Yunnan Province liked the picturesque natural scenery here very much so he decided to construct a whole park here. Many halls, pavilions, towers bonsais, rockeries, trees and terraces were built at that time and formed the original Grand View Park.

Today the Grand View Park can be divided into 33 sections: the Historical Garden, the South Garden and the West Garden. The Historical Garden remains the architecture style of Ming and Qing Dynasties consists of he Jinwupu, the Louwailou, the Mindscape Garden and the East Garden. The South Garden is the combination of Chinese and Western garden art consists of the Yu Manor and Lu Garden. The West Garden is a modern scenic area good for leisure and recreations.

Among all the sightseeing in the Grand View Park, the most famous one is the Grand View Tower. First built in the late 1680s, just like the most of historic relics experienced in history, it was destroyed in wars and rebuilt many times in the following dynasties. The pavilion we see today was reconstructed in 1883. It is a three-storied pavilion. At the entrance there stands a long antithetical couplet which was written by a famous Qing Dynasty scholar. On the couplet there write 180 characters divided into 2 parts. The first part describes the charming and magnificent natural scenery and the second part tells the history of Yunnan is over 2000 years. It is one of the most valued cultural treasures in Yunnan Province.

Besides the historical sites, the Grand View Park is also a botanical garden rich in ornamental plants. More than 600 varieties of plants including 200 indigenous plants are living here that make the garden as the lead in Kunming. Moreover, about 70,000 square meters pond with more than 10 breeds of water lilies makes it the biggest water lily watching base in Kunming. What do you think of this beautiful park?
