With the history of more than 1000 years, it is one of the best-preserved old streets in China and has developed into a historic and commercial street nowadays.

The street was originally built during the Song Dynasty (960 - 1279), but there were not many buildings remained from that period. The most famous architectures today were built from the Ming and Qing Dynasties (1368-1911). During Ming and Qing Dynasty, Tunxi Ancient Street was regarded as a distribution center for goods and materials to Huizhou. Once an ancient Western-European architect visited this old street and he praised it as "The Eastern Ancient Rome".

Tunxi Ancient Street is one of the famous tourist destinations because of its antiquity. Similar to other old streets in China, local architecture style, the rich folk custom and delicate traditional handiworks are all worth seeing. There are 4 streets mainly selling jades and "scholar's four treasures" (writing-brush, ink stick, ink slab and paper). So if you are interested in Chinese calligraphy or Chinese painting, here is excellent for you.

On such an old street there has two museums: Tunxi Museum and Wancuilou. The Tunxi Museum is a two-storey building. On the first floor, visitors could see a display of furniture from the Ming and Qing dynasties and on the second floor there is an exhibition of Chines calligraphy and paintings.
