It is said that the shape of Hongcun Village is like an ox. The locals consider the Leigang Hill as the head of the ox; two huge trees on the hill are the two horns; the residences in the village is the main body; a crescent pond is the stomach, a winding stream is the intestines and the four bridges are the four feet. Among all of stone carvings in Hongcun Village, the Memorial Archway of Governor Hu Wenguang, the tracery at the West Garden and the decoration inside the Chengzhi Hall are the most excellent and best preserved ones. What's more, in the village, you will see numerous varieties of figures and patterns are carved on the columns, beams and door frames and gilded with gold. It is said that about five kilograms gold had been used in gilding the wood carvings during the construction of the house.
