Located at the south shore of Hong Kong Island, Aberdeen is a famous fishing village in old days and now the largest satellite town with the population of about 60 thousand. Now the village has become one of the most famous tourist destinations in Hong Kong.

History of Aberdeen
Regarded as the origin of Hong Kong, Aberdeen has the history of more than 150 years. Even before Hong Kong became a trade center for the foreign businessmen, there had villagers settle down in Aberdeen. In 1857, the first large dock in Hong Kong was built here called the Xiapu Dock. In the early 20 century, the Dacheng Paper-making Factory was established in the east of Aberdeen. As time goes by, due to the flourishing of nearby fisheries, the population of Aberdeen sharply declined. Today here becomes a top attraction in Hong Kong and visitors could taste of the traditional atmosphere in Aberdeen because most of residents still keep their traditional lifestyles.

Local People's Life
With the old-fashioned boats serving as floating homes for thousands of people, the traditional fishing life still prevails in the village. Located on the south side of Hong Kong, this fishing village is the traditional home to the Tanka seafaring people. The whole area of the Harbor is actually known as the Aberdeen Floating Village and very popular among visitors. Until now, most of the Tanka live on the waters of Aberdeen Bay still live a traditional way residing in boats.  If lucky enough, you may meet some warm-heart fishers who would invite you to their dwellings, experiencing the traditional life of boat-dwellers and enjoy some tasty seafood as well. If there's no invitation, take a sampan ride by yourself is also a unique experience. The sightseeing sampan boats lead you to travel around the Harbor to see the Tanka villages and boats. After the sightseeing tours by riding on a sampan along the water, you may gain a deeper insight of the lifestyle of Hong Kong fishing folks. Please note that you should take rides only with licensed operators and be careful all the time.
