Zhaojun Tomb [ Related Itinerary ]

Located 9 kilometers from Hohhot City, on the northern bank of the Dahei River, Zhaojun Tomb is one of the symbol attractions in Hohhot. The tomb was built to in memory of Wang Zhaojun, a historic princess who was sent to marry the leader of the Huns in the Inner Mongolia to establish the good relationship between the two groups. With the long history of nearly 2000 years, Zhaojun Tomb is regarded as one of the largest Han tombs in China.

About Wang Zhaojun
Wang Zhaojun was born in a ordinary Han family in the Western Han Dynasty and because of her beauty, she was elected to enter the imperial palace. In the year of 33 BC, the leader of the Huns came to ask for her hand in marriage. In order to establish a good relationship with the Huns, Zhaojun agreed to marry him. So she had to went out beyond the Great Wall, trekking for a long time to get to the Inner Mongolia. This is called Zhaojun Chu Sai, a very important incident happened in the history of Han and the Huns. After the marriage, during her rest life in the Huns, Zhaojun showed her respect to the local customs and achieved the goal to built the good relationship between the two groups.

What to See in Zhaojun Tomb
Covering an area of 13,000 square meters, Zhaojun Tomb looks like an inverted cloak. In front of the tomb stands the symbol architecture - the bronze statues of Wang Zhaojun and her husband. They were riding horses and talking to each other intimately. The statues express the friendly relations between the two nationalities. Behind the bronze statues, there are several steles displaying the praises of Wang Zhaojun to in memory of her great contributions. Behind the steles, some stone stairs and a stone platform are the leading to the Zhaojun Tomb. Upon the stone platform there is a pavilion. Standing on the pavilion visitors could have a panorama view of the surrounding scenery as well as the far away Mt. Yinshan.

With long history, the Zhaojun Tomb is regarded as a symbol of the national unity of China in ancient times. As time goes by, this historical site becomes more valuable. Nowadays, the Tomb has become one of the eight most famous tourist attractions in Hohhot. So during your tour in Hohhot, never miss this historical relic.
