Dazhao Temple [ Related Itinerary ]

Located in old Hohhot city, Dazhao Temple is the largest and the oldest Tibetan-Buddhist temple which has a great influence in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. With long history and rich cultural relics, it is regarded as one of the must-see destinations in Hohhot.

History about Dazhao Temple
Originally built in 1580 during the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), Dazhao Temple was the oldest Tibetan-Buddhist temple in Inner Mongolia. The temple was named as Hongci Temple at first and later changed to be Wuliang Temple in Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). And because the statue of Sakyamuni in the temple was made of silver entirely, so it is also known as the Silver Buddha Temple among the locals. In 1640, the temple experienced a major reconstruction.

Treasures in Dazhao Temple
Today Dazhao Temple is full of Tibetan-Buddhist treasures among which the most notable are the "Three Marvelous Treasures": the Silver Buddha Figure, the dragons carved on the huge golden pillars and the wall paintings. All of them are the historic treasures of Ming Dynasty well preserved with high art values.

Silver Buddha Figure: Set in the main hall of the temple, the Silver Buddha Figure refers to the state of Sakyamuni which was made of silver entirely. With the history of more than 400 years, with the height of 3 meters, this statue with a sitting posture is regarded as one of the biggest silver Buddha figures in China.

Dragon Carvings: Dragon carvings refer to the two dragons carved on the mail pillars of the hall, the huge golden pillars on both sides of the silver Buddha figure. The lively figure and the splendid atmosphere express the elaborate skills of artists in ancient China.

Wall Paintings: As an outstanding part in Dazhao Temple, the Wall Paintings have rich contents, colorful descriptions and lively pictures. From these paintings, visitors could read and understand various Buddhism stories. Well preserved with rich culture values, these elaborate wall paintings show the professional skills of artists in Ming Dynasty.

Due to the long history, the well preserved buildings, the architecture style of Ming Dynasty, the splendid statues, the delicate frescos, the musical instruments and the rich collection of Buddhist scriptures and culture, Dazhao Temple has become a landmark of Hohhot city and becomes more and more popular among visitors from home and abroad.
