The Sun Island Scenic Area located on the north bank of the Songhua River is one of the top tourist destinations in Harbin. Covering an area of about 88 square kilometers, it is surrounded by blue water, crystal lakes, wooden rockeries, beautiful flowers and exotic buildings and awarded as a national 5A scenic spot. The Sun Island Scenic Area is a famous summer resort and a paradise for ice-snow travel in winter.

The Sun Island was commonly known by people for a beautiful song named On the Sun Island in 1980s. It is a charming island with different beauties in four seasons. In spring, with the warm temperature, all the flowers in full bloom dancing with green grass, birds are singing, clear springs and waterfalls are flowing happily; in summer, the island is an ideal place to get rid of the summer heat by large scale of green coverage; in autumn, the Sun Island is decorated as a gorgeous fairyland by the red and yellow leaves; in winter, it becomes the paradise for ice-snow travel since the artistic snow sculptures make a unique landscape. The attractive beauty of Sun Island is appeal to more and more visitors to the island all the year round.

With more than 20 scenic spots, the Sun Island Scenic Area can be divided into three parts. In the north and west areas there is a sort of animal world consists of Deer Garden, Swan Lake and Squirrel Island. A visit here, visitors could see a lot of lovely animals. The Ice Sculpture Garden is the highlight of the Sun Island from where visitors could see many awarded works in the Harbin International Snow Sculpture Art Expo. The picturesque Cloud-water Gloriette is another attractive spot that visitors should not miss. Relying on the Sun Lake, two storeys of this gloriette are built on the water. The south area is the place to taste of the Russian culture where visitors can find some Russian buildings, restaurants and Russian cultural demonstrations, including an art gallery and traditional song and dance presentations. Also, visitors can watch Russian films and dances and listen to the Russian songs in the Russian Royal Golden Theater.

There is no doubt that the most busy time of the Sun Island Scenic Area is in winter. Every year during the Snow Sculpture Exposition, a series of exciting ice activities will be held here.
