Harbin, the provincial capital of Heilongjiang Province is known as the 'Eastern Moscow' in China, with its unique and exotic atmosphere. The most exotic place in Harbin is the Central Street. Built in 1898, the Central Street got its present name in 1928 and then it became the First Street and the landmark of Harbin City.

History and Development of Central Street
Built in 1898, the street was opened up as an access road for the freight transport from the Far East in the early times. Later, local inhabitants and laborers built the houses on both sides of this street and then this street got the name of Chinese Street. Since 1902, a lot of colonists came here and buy most of the lands to build the new buildings, shops, goods and restaurants, since then the street became prosperous rapidly. In 1924, the street was covered by a Russia engineer with bread-sized square granites which became the symbol of rich at that time. In 1928, the street was officially renamed as the Central Street and still in use today. In 1997 the Central Street was changed into a pedestrian street. As time goes by, with strong exotic atmosphere, it became the most fashionable street in Harbin and attracts more and more visitors from home and abroad.

Modern Central Street
The Central Street is a junction where visitors could find both modern architectures and historical civilizations. Along this 1,450 meters long street, nowadays there are totally 71 architectures that reflect the European style including those of the Renaissance through to the Baroque Period. Walking along the street, visitors can find various kind of things with different style such as Russian furs, British nylon, French perfume, German medicine, Japanese cloths, Swedish watches and so on. All of them are well preserved and continuously play an important role in people's daily life. All the buildings and things we see today interpreting that this street has witnessed the most brilliant European cultural development for the past 300 years.
