Six Harmonies Pagoda [ Related Itinerary ]

Located on Yuelun Hill overlooking the Qiantang River, at the south of West Lake, the Six Harmonies Pagoda is one of the masterpieces of ancient Chinese architecture and one of the top tourist destinations in Hangzhou. Originally built in 970 during the Northern Song Dynasty (960 - 1127), the Six Harmonies Pagoda is under protection as a key national cultural relic today.

The name of the pagoda "Six Harmonies" comes from the six Buddhist ordinances. There are two reasons for the construction of this pagoda, one is to calm the tidal waters of the Qiantang River and the other is to be a navigational aid. Unfortunately, the pagoda was completely destroyed during a battle in the year of 1121. The one we see today is rebuilt and extended on the originally site during the Ming (1368-1644) and Qing (1644 -1911) Dynasties with the additional exterior eaves added to the pagoda.

Six Harmonies Pagoda is 59.89 meters high with the shape of octagonal. Although only has seven interior layers, the appearance of it being a thirteen-story building. Each layer inside of the pagoda is well designed and consists of four elements: the exterior walls, the interior walls, a zigzagged corridor and a small chamber. Also on the ceilings of the seven layers there show the beautiful carvings including animals, flowers, birds and characters. Totally there are more than 200 sites of brick carvings in the Six Harmonies Pagoda. All of these carvings are the rare material proofs of ancient Chinese architectures.

Viewed from outside, the upper layer surface of the pagoda appears to be bright while the underneath appears dark. Inside the pagoda there is a spiral staircase leading to the top floor. Upon ascending the pagoda, visitors could enjoy a spectacular panorama view of the grand Qiantan River, the speeding sailing boats, verdant mountains in the distance, as far as the misty horizon. There is no doubt that the breathtaking scenery on the top of the pagoda will certainly leave a deep impression to visitors.

An Ancient Chinese Pagodas Museum was built near the Six Harmonies Pagoda in 1990s, from where visitors could see the exhibitions of the micro carved models of almost every famed pagoda in China. All the exhibitions in the museum express the magnificent architecture art of ancient China.
