House of Bai people in Xizhou [ Related Itinerary ]

Traditional Houses of Bai people in Xizhou is a fine sight to see in Dali, which is 18 kilometers north of Dali Ancient Town. Bordering Erhai in the east and Mt. Cangshan in the west, the well preserved architectures show a lyrical atmosphere and carefree lifestyle.

According to the historical records, the history of Xizhou can be dated back to the Sui Dynasty (581-618 AD). As time goes by, Xizhou is regarded as the symbol of Bai minority culture. Houses of Bai people in the town are well designed with three huts, one screen wall, four sides and five courtyards. The local residents are characterized by a traditional Chinese rectangular courtyard with a screen wall facing the gate. The outer walls are mainly painted with lime and fine silt. Around the wall are the landscape paintings and decorations with profusion of colors. From the black tiles, white walls, high rooftops, archways, gates, windows and outer cross walls, all of the decorations and well preserved streets, visitors will still find the traces of past glory in the old town.

Step into the entrance to Xizhou, all the visitors will be attracted by a magnificent structure - a two-storey building made of wood and brick. The first floor is a corridor leading you to read the history while the second floor is an attic of horizontal inscribed board. Go on walking, there appears a banyan tree and on the tree there is a a large flock of egrets living a comfortable and luxurious life. From generation to generation, the banyan tree, the egrets and human beings are in harmonious relationship. Walking along the slate road, strolling though the winding alleys, visitors will have a good look at the delicate and intricate designs on the walls.

The key houses under protection include residence of Yang Pinxiang, House of the Yan's, House of the Dong's, the Mansion of the Zhao's and so on. There is no doubt that all of them are perfectly combine the traditional houses of Bai people and western architecture.

As the historical and cultural town in southwest China, Xizhou town enjoys charming scenery and abundant resources. With long history, original appearance, rich Bai culture and tranquil atmosphere, it is the place should not be missed during the tour in Dali.
