General Joseph W. Stilwell Museum [ Related Itinerary ]

The General Joseph W. Stilwell Museum is located in the Yuzhong District of Chongqing. The museum is the former residence of General Joseph W. Stilwell, who was chief commander of US forces helped the Chinese people a lot during the World War II. Opened to the public in 1991, it was regarded as the one of crucial relics and a popular tourist attraction in Chongqing.

About General Joseph W. Stilwell
General Joseph Warren Stilwell (1883 - 1946), was born in Palatka, Florida and graduated from the United States Military Academy. During the First World War, he served as an intelligence officer in France and was honored with Distinguished Service Medal. In 1942, during the Second World War, General Joseph W. Stilwell acted under orders to come to Chongqing, China. As the commander of the China Burma India Theater, he commanded the Allied invasion of Burma and showed his excellent military talents. In 1944, he was recalled by American President and in 1946 he passed away.

What to See in General Joseph W. Stilwell Museum
During the period of the Second World War, here became the headquarters of the China Burma India Theater. It is a three-storied house, including an office, an adjutant room, two meeting rooms, bedrooms and a basement. In order to reappear the original official residence, the house was restored in 2002 and opened to the public in 2003. Entering into the museum, visitors will first see the head sculpture of the General and then some old objects. Go straight on the left there is the conference room for military operations. In this room there displays a miniature projector, a phonograph and various military documents. Next to the conference room is a small lounge. On the right side are the office and the bedroom. The latest radio and telephone are displayed here. In front of the gate is the dining room. Visitors can see the knife and fork are neatly placed on the table.

Inside the museum, there are more than 200 valuable historical photos showing the good relationship between General Joseph W. Stilwell and China. Although being restored several times, the style of this former residence has not changed. Since opened, tens of thousands of visitors from home and abroad have visited here.
