Fengdu Ghost Town [ Related Itinerary ]

Located on the northern bank of the Yangtze River, Fengdu Ghost City is a historic cultural town with Chinese characters and is famous for the ghost culture all over the world. Having the long history of nearly 2000 years, it is regarded as one of the must-visit destinations during the Yangtze River Cruise in Chongqing.

Fengdu gained the reputation as the "Ghost City" in the Eastern Han Dynasty (25 AD - 220 AD). Later the Ghost City combines the cultures of Confucianism, Taoism and Buddhism with the mystique of ghosts. Since Tang Dynasty, there are 48 temples built in the city, all of which look magnificent with lifelike statues.

In ancient Chinese culture, the dead people must experience three tests so that to have the afterlife. The three tests are happened at three different places: Nothing-To-Be-Done-Bridge; Ghost Torturing Pass and the Tianzi Palace. So these three places are the most attractive part for visitors in Fengdu.

Nothing-To-Be-Done-Bridge
According to the legend, the Nothing-To-Be-Done-Bridge connects the nether world with the real world. The first test is happened here. The bridge we see today is built in the Ming Dynasty consists of three stone arches. The middle arch is said for testing dead people, so visitors are encouraged to pass from the other two arches. Below the bridge are square-shaped pools of water. According to the legend, during the test, virtuous people will pass over the bridge without obstacle while the villainous people will fall into the pools.

Ghost Torturing Pass
Here is the place for second test, the place where the dead people do the report to the King of Hell for judgment. 18 sculptures of ferocious demons are standing in front of the structure. These lifelike devils create true eeriness atmosphere.

Tianzi Palace
Covering an area of 2,908 square yards, Tianzi Palace has a history of more than 300 years and it is the the oldest and largest temple on Ming Mountain. According to the legend, here is the place for the third test. The dead people must stand on the stone in front of the gate on one foot for 3 minutes. Virtuous people can do this while the villainous people can not and will be sent to hell.

Fengdu is not only a legendary ghost town, but also a art treasure house and one of the most famous cultural landscape along the Yangtze River.
