Chongqing Three Gorges Museum [ Related Itinerary ]

Chongqing Three Gorges Museum is located on the western side of the People's Square, opposite the Chongqing People's Hall. Opened to the public in 2005, the museum houses the various archaeological finds unearthed from the areas along the Yangtze River, explains the details about Three Gorges Dam and highlights the history, culture, lifestyle of Chongqing and its countrysides.

Chongqing Three Gorges Museum covers a whole area of 42,497 square meters, with the exhibition hall of 23,225 square meters. There are more than 170,000 ancient relics and artifacts display in the museum, showing the life in "Old Chongqing". In the museum has 4 Basic Displays: Glorious Three Gorges, about the engineering aspects of the Three Gorges Dam and reflecting the historical spirits of Three Gorges; The Ancient Ba-Yu, explaining the origin and development of local history about the Ba and Yu peoples; City Roads, which describes the changes of Chongqing City and encapsulates everyday life in the early 20th century; The Anti-Japanese War, chronicling the period when Chongqing was the wartime and the ordeals of the people in this city. Besides the 4 Basic Displays, there are 6 Themed Displays: Paintings and calligraphy exhibition; Porcelains of various dynasties; Coins of various dynasties; Sculptures of the Han Dynasty; Folk customs of the people of southwest China; Cultural relics donated by Li Chuli; Sculptures of the Han Dynasty. All these themed displays show you the rich history and culture of the Old Chongqing.

As the name of this museum express, the highlight in the museum is the part of Glorious Three Gorges. There is a 360 degree cinema of Three Gorges that will show you the natural scenery of Three Gorges before the construction of the dam. Chongqing Three Gorges Museum has more than 170,000 collections and among them, the most famous are unearthed relics in Ba-shu culture, Sichuan Han portrait brick, portrait and stone figurines. Besides, the famous calligraphy and paintings of the Song dynasty, purple sand ware in Ming and Qing dynasties, ancient porcelain, coins, steles, jade, bamboo artifacts, silk and southwest national cultural relics are all precious and worth a visit.
