Wuhou Memorial Temple [ Related Itinerary ]

Chengdu Wuhou Memorial Temple also known as the Memorial Temple of Marquis Wu is a famous historical site located in the south part of Chengdu city. It is dedicated to Zhuge Liang, a famous military counsellor of Kingdom of Shu in the Three Kingdoms Period (220 - 280). Now Wuhou Temple is actually the museum to learn the history of the Three Kingdoms Period.

There is no record telling when Wuhou Memorial Temple was firstly built. The present temple we see today was rebuilt in 1672 of Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). Covering an area of 37,000 square meters, the temple consists of three sightseeing parts: the Cultural Relics Area, the Garden Area and Jinli Street. The Cultural Relics Area is the main part of the whole temple that shows the historical sites of the Three Kingdoms. Walking along the central axis, visitors will meet the first gate, the second gate, the Temple of Liu Bei, the corridor and the Temple of Zhugeliang. All the main buildings in Wuhou Memorial Temple are located in the north part facing to the south.

Wuhou Memorial Temple shows the history of Kingdom Shu of the Three Kingdoms period. Inside the temple there totally has 41 historical figures' statues of Kingdom Shu, 1.7 to 3 meters tall. All of them were made by the craftsmen in Qing Dynasty. The highlight and the most valuable cultural relic in the temple is a big stele called Triple-Success Stele which was set up in the year of 809. The stele is 3.67 meters high and 0.95 meters wide. Why called Triple-Success Stele? Firstly, on the stele there is an article written by Pei Du, a famous minister served four emperors in succession during the Tang Dynasty; secondly, the calligraphy on the stele is written by Liu Gongquan, one of the most famous calligraphers in ancient China; thirdly, there is a statement telling the morality and achievements of Zhuge Liang, the famous military counsellor of Kingdom of Shu.
