Thatched Cottage of Du Fu [ Related Itinerary ]

Thatched Cottage of Du Fu is located in the western part of Chengdu city. Just as the name implies, here is the former residence of Du Fu, a very famous poet of Tang Dynasty. Du Fu is regarded as the "poet-sage" in China, and due to his high fame, the Thatched Cottage of Du Fu is the largest and the best preserved tourist site of Master Poet Dufu in Chengdu.

About Du Fu
Du Fu was born in the year of 712. In 746, he took the official examination in Chang'an (now Xian) but failed. Since then he lived in Chang'an for more than 10 years. In 759, Du Fu moved to Chengdu. He built a thatched hut and lived here for about 4 years. During the time staying in Chengdu thatched hut, Du Fu wrote more than 240 poems representing the misery and the real life of common people. Many of them has become the poems that the school students have to learn today. After he left Chengdu, the thatched hut was abandoned for a long time.

The Thatched Cottage of Du Fu we see today was reconstructed during the Qing dynasty. Covering an area of 24 hectares, it not only includes the original site of Dufu Thatched House, but also combine the Fan'an Temple in the east and the Plum Garden in the west. The original Thatched House now consists of the screen wall, wooden door, Daxie building, Poem House and Gongbu Ancestral Temple in the central axis. Besides the original Thatched House, the garden area is also an important part. With delicate bridges, pavilions and corridors, large numbers of plum trees and bamboos, winding streams, the garden area enjoys a tranquil atmosphere and it is really nice place for leisure.
