Green Ram Temple (Qingyanggong) [ Related Itinerary ]

The Green Ram Temple also called Qingyanggong is located in the northwest part of Chengdu. As a gathering place for spirits seeking for enlightenment and center of Taoist studies, it is one of the most famous Taoist temples in China, also a top tourist destination in Chengdu.

The Green Ram Temple was originally built in the Tang Dynasty (618-907). The whole temple consists of five main halls: Hunyuan Hall, Hall of Three Purities, Hall of Goddess Doumu, Hall of Jade Emperor and Hall of Tang Emperors. Besides, many other historical sites such as Eight Trigrams Pavilion, Bronze Goats and the best-preserved Taoist books are all worth a visit. Until now, the Green Ram Temple is still active with monks, traditional Chinese medicine doctors and music teachers. Also here is a good place for Taiji learning.

The Hall of Three Purities is the main hall of the Green Ram Temple. It was first built in the Tang Dynasty and rebuilt in the Qing Dynasty. In the Hall, there has three huge statues of the highest gods in the Taoism that represent the deities of Nature, Virtue and Wisdom. Also there are two bronze beasts guarded the hall. At first sight they looks like goat, but the embodiment has the elements of 12 Chinese zodiac: with rat ear, ox snout, tiger claw, rabbit back, dragon horn, snake tail, horse mouth, goat beard, monkey neck, corn eyes, dog belly, pig buttocks, etc.

Most visitors came out of the Green Ram Temple said that the most magnificent building in the temple is the Eight Trigrams Pavilion. Built in the Qing Dynasty, it is 20 meters in height and covers an area of 300 square meters. It is an octagonal pavilion with a square foundation and a round roof, which symbolize the ancient Chinese philosophy: the sky is round and the earth is square. There are stone pillars carved with the figures of dragons enclosing the life-sized statue of Lao Tzu (founder of Taoism). The upturned roofs are covered in yellow, green and purple ceramic tiles. While the highlight of this building is that it is a wooden and stone structure without any bolts or pegs.
