Beihai Park [ Related Itinerary ]

Located in the city central zone, Beihai Park is one of the oldest and most authentically preserved imperial gardens in China with the history of over 1000 years. Beihai Park covers an area of 68 hectares, about half of which is taken up by the lake. Around the lake there scattered several good sights including temples, pavilions, halls and the footprints of old palaces and imperial relics.

Jade Flowery Islet has the most impressive scenery in the park. On top of the Jade Flowery Islet, the White Dagoba was built in 1651. The White Dagoba is the symbol building of Beihai Park from where you can enjoy a panorama view of the whole park as well as the Forbidden City. The pagoda stands 35.9 meters high and inside it holds the Buddhist Scriptures, the monk's mantle and alms bowl and two pieces of Sarira.

Opposite Jade Island, the Northern Shore features many Ming dynasty pavilions, halls and the excellent temple of the Western Paradise Hall. On the northwest side of the shore there stands the Five Dragon Pavilion, a set of Ming period structures. To the northwest lies the well-known Nine Dragon Screen, which is the only screen having nine huge dragons on both sides in China. This 5 meters high and 27 meters long glazed tile spirit wall emblazoned with nine ferocious dragons.

In the southeast of the park is the Circular City surrounded by a city wall, which is in fact an exquisite garden. Within the Circular City the most famous scenic spot is the Receiving Light Hall. In it there house a 1.5 meters tall white jade statue of Buddha with inlaid jewels and apparently a lot of light. Besides, various places deserve to visit including halls, towers and pavilions.

If you like, you could also have a meal in Fangshan Restaurant. Located at the northern shore of the lake, this restaurant was operated by a cook who formerly worked for the imperial family. It is said that the food here with the delicious imperial flavor, so it became very popular since opened in 1925.
